What a massive week for the decoder team! It started with our sponsorship of the Sponsorship Australasia Conference, where we gave everyone a sneak peek at our refreshed brand identity, and ended with an Italian family lunch to celebrate the brand launch to our staff.
“Placing your brand in the right space, at the right time”.
That’s what we do, and that’s why we thought we had such a good fit with this sponsorship opportunity. For many sponsors, leveraging an opportunity is all about how to get their brand into the ‘property’ so that it appears relevant, respectful and engaging. So we took on the challenge of showing the industry the ‘decoder way’.
From the minute the Conference opened until the closing address, decoder ensured that attendees had water when they were thirsty, biscuits when they were hungry, interesting stories to read when they were bored, and lollies to enjoy when the afternoon sugar levels were dropping.
Decoder was also host of the inaugural Conference beach volley competition. Having recently created the ‘Team Nat’ brand for Olympic champion beach volleyballer Natalie Cook, we thought it was a great opportunity to give attendees the chance to meet Nat and get some insider tips to the winning volleyball shot.

The fast-format mini comp allowed our six teams to fight it out on the sand, with an exhilarating final between the two powerhouse teams of the comp. And as the sun set over the beach, everyone was a winner.
With the comp wrapped up, there was time for just one more activity – Natalie Cook v EVERYONE ELSE! It started as 40 people to one, with the odds stacked against our Olympic hero. After a couple of big shots and some awesome sand dives, Nat managed to secure three more players for her team. And slowly, one by one, Team 40 became smaller…and smaller.
Once down to four on four, Team Nat started to shed its members…until we had a woman v woman faceoff. Natalie Cook v Jane Hutchison, National Corporate Partnerships Manager of Cancer Council Australia. The tension was mounting. If Nat was to make it to her 5th Olympics, she had to get this win under her belt. It was a close call, but Nat made it over the line with an impressive winning spike. It’s pretty impossible to beat the drive and determination of an Olympic athlete!
After enjoying the celebrations, complete with champagne and a massive gold trophy, it was a weary yet determined bunch that were ready bright and early the next morning to hear Nick present his thoughts on ‘pitching your sponsorship ops to internal stakeholders’.
It’s all about leveraging small opportunities into big returns, using smart creative strategy. (How big are those returns Nick?!)
